A study on the Correlation Between Perceived Family Support and Hopelessness in the Patient on Chronic Disease

Abstract
The problem addressed by this study was the identification of family support and hopelessness per-ceived by chronic disease patients who are admitting, and the examination of the relationship among their family support, hopelessness and general characteristics.
The purpose of this study was to provide theoretical understanding of the concept¢¥s relationship and to help nurses decrease the patient¢¥s hopelessness level by the help of the family.
The ultimate goal was to contribute to the planning of nursing interventions toward more effective and efficient adaptation for chronic disease patients.
The subject for this study were the 73 patients who were admitted in the room of the 2 general hospital.
The study method used was a questionnaire and the data were collected from may 6 to July 30, 1994.
The instrument used for this study were the Cobb¢¥s family support scale adapted by Kang(1984) and the Beck¢¥s hopelessness scale.
The data were analyzed by using on S.P.S.S computerized program and included percentage-test, ANOVA and pearson correlation coefficient.
The results of the study are summarized as follows.
1. The mean score of family support was 35.07(SD=¡¾5.013) in a range from 11 to 44 and the mean
score of hopelessness was 42.76(SD=¡¾9.633), in range from 20 to 80.
2. The hypothesis of this study, ¡°The higher the degree of family support perceived by the
patients, the lower the degree of hopelessness", was supported (r=-0.5399,p=0.000)
3. 1) General characteristics were related to the degree of family support marital status(p<0.05).
2) General characteristics were related to the degree of hopelessness age, educational level,
family income(p<0.05).
For these subject there was a significant relationship between family support and the degree of hopelessness. The patients need family support to decrease their hopelessness.
The family is the primary supporting system for patients are treating by chronic disease.
The nurse should plan interventions to decrease hopelessness level by family support with chronic disease patient.
If so, their coping ability and well-being level may be promoted.
